One for One
One for One
TOMS Shoes was founded on a simple premise: With every pair you
purchase, TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need. One for
One. Using the purchasing power of individuals to benefit the greater
good is what we're all about. The TOMS One for One business model
transforms our customers into benefactors, which allows us to grow a
truly sustainable business rather than depending on fundraising for
support.
Why shoes?
Many children in developing countries grow up barefoot. Whether at
play, doing chores or going to school, these children are at risk:
- A leading cause of disease in developing countries is
soil-transmitted diseases, which can penetrate the skin through bare
feet. Wearing shoes can help prevent these diseases, and the long-term
physical and cognitive harm they cause. - Wearing shoes also prevents feet from getting cuts and sores. Not
only are these injuries painful, they also are dangerous when wounds
become infected. - Many times children can't attend school barefoot because shoes are a
required part of their uniform. If they don't have shoes, they don't go
to school. If they don't receive an education, they don't have the
opportunity to realize their potential.
One for One is spreading
TOMS has also inspired other companies to implement a One for One
model. Ralph Lauren sells co-branded Polo Rugby TOMS, giving a matched
pair with every pair sold. Element Skateboards has issued limited
edition TOMS + Element shoes as well as a One for One skateboard. With
every skateboard purchased, one will be given to a child at the Indigo
Skate Camp in Durban, South Africa. It is TOMS’ hope that as our One for
One movement continues to grow, more and more companies will look to
incorporate giving into what they do.
Our Story
In
2006 an American traveler, Blake Mycoskie, befriended children in
Argentina and found they had no shoes to protect their feet. Wanting to
help, he created TOMS Shoes, a company that would match every pair of
shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. One
for One. Blake returned to Argentina with a group of family, friends and
staff later that year with 10,000 pairs of shoes made possible by
caring TOMS customers.
Since our beginning in May 2006, TOMS has given over 400,000* pairs
of shoes to children in need, through the purchases of caring customers.

HARRISON HUDSON (Favorite Gentlemen)
Hailing from Nashville,
Tennessee, Harrison Hudson is comprised of Brandon Dees (Bass), Shaun
Rawlings (Drums), and front man, Harrison Hudson (Vocals, Guitar).
Described by critics as raw Americana, and by themselves as "no-frills"
rock'n'roll, Harrison Hudson delivers melody-inspired rock. "We decided
one day to keep things simple. Ever since then we've been a three piece
band playing as loud and as hard as we can while still bringing a good
melody." Front man, Harrison Hudson, got his start in Atlanta, where he
recorded his first full length album, Angels on One Side…And the Other
on the Other, with Jeremiah Edmond of Vintage Song Studio in 2006.
Hudson had intended to be a solo project with a full backing band.
However, when he moved to Nashville he began playing with Dees and
Rawlings, and decided to permanently strip down to a three piece. The
trio then wrote and recorded their first album together, Blood, Sweat,
and Sweat, which was released in February, 2008.
Harrison Hudson
shares musical roots with fellow Favorite Gentlemen band, Manchester
Orchestra (front man Harrison Hudson has played alongside MO's Andy
Hull, Jonathan Corley, and Chris Freeman in acts such as Sweet Lucy
Brown, Tiger Society, and East On Autry, and bassist Brandon Dees
briefly played bass for Manchester Orchestra). Harrison Hudson's music
has been called a blend of the East coast — from southern twang to New
York dirt, and everything in between. They are undoubtedly one of the
acts redefining the sound of Nashville.

PARACHUTE
MUSICAL
D.C. natives Josh Foster (vocals/piano), Tom Gilbert
(guitar/vocals), and Ben Jacoby (drums) deposited themselves into
Nashville just a year before releasing Everything is Working Out, and
work out it did. The guys settled in place after discovering Tennessee
music man Andrew Samples (bass/vocals). Foster's soaring voice and
detailed compositions are the perfect home for Gilbert's unique,
artistic style on guitar, and Samples' driving bass sparks a fire under
Jacoby, setting ablaze a well-matched rhythm section.
New songs are
now pouring out of them! Their latest single, No Comfort, was released
in January 2010, kicking off another whole year of touring. The single
features two new songs recorded with Nashville producer Derek Garten,
whom the band worked with on the previous record.
The new sound
is a step ahead in the right direction. Foster's lyrics remain heartfelt
while the music becomes stronger. It is original and well-rehearsed;
they're so tight you'd swear they were all wearing girdles. These guys
are having fun, no doubt about it, and there isn't another band in
Nashville more ready to be taken seriously.

DIE
TO YOURSELF
Die to Yourself, a five piece from Oklahoma City,
is a Christian Metal/Hardcore band that thrives on spreading the Gospel
of Jesus Christ as well as creating intuitively heavy and melodic music.
The name, “Die to Yourself”, depicts dying to one’s flesh and living
for Christ, which has become the band’s mission statement and overall
goal. Deriving influences from bands such as As I Lay Dying, Killswitch
Engage, and Unearth, the band makes conscious effort to write superior
quality music in order to present a sound that can be enjoyable by an
array of different listeners. The band got its start in July of 2005 and
began touring in the summer of 2006. Branching out from their hometown,
touring has led them all across the United States allowing their
nationwide fan base to grow as well. In the Spring 2007 series of
“Uprise Zine,” Die to Yourself is posted in issue 6 as one of the
“Band’s You Should Know About.” Their new found status as “road
warriors” has enabled them to play at festivals throughout the U.S.,
such as Ichthus, Cornerstone, and Foundry Fest. Die to Yourself has also
had the privilege of sharing the stage with such acts as Unearth, A Day
To Remember, Whitechapel and War of Ages. Ryan Leitru, guitar player
for Facedown Records band For Today, commented, “Die To Yourself…honest,
catchy, creative, spirit filled metal.” Over the past four years the
band has gone through stages of progression involving member changes,
endorsement deals (Washburn guitars, Randall amps, Spector basses,
etc…), and studio work (two EP’s and a recent twelve track album). Kevin
Gates at Engaged Audio (working with bands like NeverShoutNever) says,
“Die to Yourself is one of the best bands I’ve ever worked with. They
are tireless in their hard-work ethics and have an ever-present
attention to details. The overall studio experience with them was great
and I would enjoy working with them again.” Though they have faced a
period of re-invention and change, Die to Yourself has persevered in
their efforts to becoming stronger and more unified than ever before.
With the current line up, consisting of Ben Yard (drums), Daryl Yard
(guitar and singing), Austin Powell (guitar), R.T. McFarland II (bass
and singing), and Austin “Keebs” Michels (lead vocals), Die to Yourself
continues on their journey to be a successful band and ministry. Having
just finished the writing and recording process of their first
full-length album, “The Unfading Truth,” they are now planning to finish
out 2009 with preparations for the release of the album and what is to
come in 2010, as well as tours across the Southern, Midwest, and Eastern
states. Assurance in their productive work habits, their drive to learn
all they can, to be their best, and their articulation of positivity in
everything make Die to Yourself a reckoning force. These five gentlemen
have their sites set on serving Christ first to achieve greatness and
are found unstoppable in their efforts. Die to Yourself, with more
exciting things to come, has a very promising future and is definitely
the band to be anticipating.

Listener has been touring the world for the past seven years developing
a unique style of “Talk Music.” Vocalist Dan Smith has been
the driving creative force of a rotating cast of musicians. Throughout
different tours the lineup of Listener might change but the goal
has always been to create honest music with energy from the heart.
Dan is a 5’11” disease free libra, loves van rides and yelling at
people. Over the past three years Listener has toured extensively
in the US. Building momentum in small and large cities alike on
house show tours in garages or attics to venues and bars opening for
large acts and headlining their own tours.
Talk Music is a term coined by Dan to describe his poetry-and music
style of art. Coming from a hip hop background early on
Smith has been a part of that world in one way or another his entire
career. These past few years has seen him take on a completely
different and more meaningful direction from his former projects
making Talk Music the main goal with first mate Chris Nelson.
